India Faces 44% More Cyberattacks Weekly Than Global Average: Check Point Report

April 2025 – India is under siege in cyberspace, as a new study from Check Point Software Technologies reveals the nation faces a staggering 44% more cyberattacks per week compared to the global average.

Massive Spike in Weekly Attacks

According to the Check Point 2025 Security Report, Indian organizations encountered an average of 3,291 cyberattacks per week. This is significantly higher than the global average of 1,847 attacks, signaling a heightened threat environment for Indian enterprises.

This sharp increase highlights India’s growing presence in the digital economy, which, while fostering innovation, also presents an expanding attack surface for cybercriminals.

Key Sectors Under Fire

The report details that critical sectors in India are being relentlessly targeted:

  • Healthcare: 8,614 attacks/week
  • Education/Research: 7,983 attacks/week
  • Government/Military: 4,731 attacks/week

The healthcare sector is especially vulnerable due to its vast stores of sensitive data and often outdated IT infrastructure.

Trends Fueling the Surge

Several factors are contributing to this cyber onslaught:

  • Rise in AI-Powered Attacks: Hackers are leveraging AI to develop more sophisticated phishing campaigns and malware.
  • Proliferation of Infostealer Malware: These tools are designed to quietly extract passwords, banking details, and corporate data.
  • Exploitation of Known Vulnerabilities: A shocking 96% of the attacks in 2024 utilized already known flaws in systems that hadn’t been patched.
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Culture: Increased use of personal devices in work settings has created more entry points for attackers.

How India Compares Globally

While India is among the most attacked countries, it isn’t alone. Taiwan topped the list in Asia with over 3,300 attacks per week. However, India’s 44% higher exposure than the global average sets off serious alarm bells.

Expert Insight

Speaking about the report, Check Point emphasized that the “maturing cyber-threat ecosystem” demands equally advanced and adaptive defenses. As cybercriminals increasingly automate and scale their operations, traditional security methods are proving insufficient.

Recommended Measures

To combat the growing threat, Check Point advises organizations in India to:

  1. Adopt Proactive Security Postures: Use AI-powered threat prevention platforms like Check Point Infinity to detect and stop attacks before damage occurs.
  2. Regular Patch Management: Keep all systems up to date to avoid known exploits.
  3. Enhance Employee Awareness: Conduct regular training and simulations to prepare staff for phishing and social engineering attempts.
  4. Segregate Networks and Protect BYOD Devices: Implement zero-trust architectures and secure endpoints across all devices accessing corporate systems.
